Brent Logan - The Prenatal Institute

Dr. Brent Logan has devoted much of his life to the study of fetal enrichment, and is a principle theorist for prenatal stimulation. He is the director of the Prenatal Institute in Seattle through which he has pioneered an enormous amount of research into prenatal stimulation. He is considered one of the most world-renowned experts in this field. In 1995, he invented the BabyPlus system based on more than 20 years of research into prenatal stimulation and his book, Learning Before Birth, Every child deserves giftedness, is helping parents to understand how fetal enrichment is achieved using the BabyPlus system.

The idea for the BabyPlus was based on the 1960s work of Lee Salk, an American psychologist who had noticed that mothers instinctively held their babies on their left side. Further studies showed that stimulating maternal environments alter the unborn baby's brain physiology and improve their learning skills.

Dr Logan says that the BabyPlus produces a complex pattern of sounds to stimulate your baby's brain cells and therefore increase his intellect. He dubs the program The Cardiac Curriculum, and says that the 40,000 babies born worldwide after the program was used during pregnancy are born calmer, not crying, and stronger both physically and intellectually.

The Basics

  • The BabyPlus – The BabyPlus is a series of 16 scientifically designed rhythmic sounds that resemble a mother's heartbeat. Dr Logan says, "The spoken word is too difficult for the developing child to understand and music is too complex. However, scientifically conducted studies show that the prenatal child recognizes the maternal heartbeat and can learn to differentiate progressively altered versions of that sound."

The BabyPlus is based on this reasoning and along with Dr Logan's own research, further studies have shown that the program boosts and strengthens the connections in your baby's brain.

  • Time – The BabyPlus can be used at any time during pregnancy, but Dr Logan recommends for maximum results that you use it from 18 weeks onwards. The lessons are designed to be listened to twice a day for an hour each time.

  • Learning rhythms – The 16 lessons are played to your baby through your abdomen on the tape recorder provided with the system. The tones sound exactly like your blood pulsing through the placenta, but vary in frequency and rhythm. Your baby learns to tell the difference between the sounds, and this means that your baby's learning process has already begun.

Logan's research was one of the first to discover that prenatal brain cells that are not stimulated will die towards the end of pregnancy. The BabyPlus stops cell death by maintaining stimulated neurons. Dr Logan says, "By reducing fetal brain cell death, prenatal stimulation results in infants being born with enhanced mental architecture."

  • The only language – Dr Logan maintains that the only true language your unborn baby can understand is that of the sound of the heartbeat. "This is the principle premise behind BabyPlus ," he says. "The presentation of small, incremental pieces of information, in the only language the fetus truly understands, in the most important classroom the child will ever occupy."
